After obtaining the BSc and MSc degrees of Agricultural Extension and Education from Shahid Chamran University and Tarbiat Modares University in Iran in 1996 and 1999 respectively and getting research, practice and planning programme experience in Iran's rural areas and extension and rural development institutions in 1999-2002, Dr. Esmail Karamidehkordi continued his PhD on Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, in the field Systemic Studies in Agricultural Knowledge Systems and Natural Resources Management in the University of Reading between 2003 and 2007 and involved in a postdoctoral research on an international research project on capacity building of agricultural cooperatives in Ethiopia. He started his career as an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Extension, Communication and Rural Development, Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Zanjan in Iran in February 2008 and was promoted as an associate professor in this university. He has started his career in the Agricultural Extension and Education Department at Tarbiat Modares University since October 2020.
His research and education advance studying socio-ecological systems, human-environment relationships, sustainable natural resources (biodiversity, land and water) management, systems thinking in sustainable agriculture and development, and participatory natural disaster management in rural areas. He also examines knowledge and innovation systems in agricultural and rural development; innovation and communication in sustainable development emphasizing social network analysis; rural livelihood systems analysis and capacity building; institutional analyses in sustainable development; integrated and participatory watershed management; policy and strategy analyses of sustainable development and natural resource management; and project management and evaluation of extension and rural development activities.
In addition to the above mentioned research and education activities at provincial, national and international levels, he has supervised over 50 master and PhD thesis and the students who have been graduated under his supervision have been able to obtain career positions as instructors, researchers and experts in different relevant situations. He has involved in development projects as researcher and facilitator in rural areas and has been active in disseminating knowledge and information through publishing results in national international journals, conferences, books and other mass media. He has also involved in relevant national and international communities as an active member or member of steering committees and has participated in reviewing papers of national and international journals, organizing internationals and national conferences and workshops.
He was the head of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Communication and Rural Development at the University of Zanjan between 2011 and 2013 and the Director of international Scientific Cooperation of this university in 2013-2020. He was appointed as the General Director of Agricultural Knowledge and Technology Extension, Ministry of Agricultural Jahad between August 2019 and October 2020. He has been the National contact person and the Focal Point of the Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) of the Biodiversity Convention; the Iran’s NCP of European Union’s Horizon 2020 on Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research and the bio-economy; & Biotechnology; the focal point of the hub of United Nations Academic Impact on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15; and the member of Steering Committee of the UI Greenmetric World University Ranking (on Sustainable Development in Higher Education Institutions).
